“The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned." – Maya Angelou
International Safehouses
A safehouse is more than just a home; it is a place of healing, support, and liberation. Although safehouses vary from culture to culture, each partner’s passion is the same: to rescue, restore, and empower the at-risk and wounded.
At the end of this page, you’ll find links to read more about each partnering safehouse.
Rescue, Restoration, & Empowerment
Returning time after time to local red-light districts, safehouse staff develop relationships with the women and men they meet. After listening to their stories and dreams, our partners gently offer them an opportunity to make a new living in a safe place. It may take hours, months, or years, but our partners remain committed, knowing each person is worth the time they invest in bringing about a new life.
Once a survivor comes to a partnering safehouse, the journey toward emotional, spiritual, and physical healing can begin. Along with shelter, she receives medical care, trauma counseling, and mentoring within a safe community of others who understand her pain. Each survivor has a different story and a unique set of needs, and our partners are dedicated to walking with them every step of the way.
Our partners understand that to live with dignity, survivors must have a means of supporting themselves. To this end, safehouses offer opportunities such as employment, vocational training, and education, along with child care, enabling survivors to rewrite their futures. Once empowered, some become agents of change in their communities by raising awareness, educating others, and even beginning their own programs.
The Role of Women At Risk, International (WAR, Int'l)
Whether coming alongside a safehouse or helping to establish one, WAR, Int’l takes joy in helping our partners fulfill their vision and mission. We have assisted in building projects, raised capital for microenterprises, and helped set up programs. We have funded scholarships and aided in repatriating internationally trafficked survivors. We purchase survivor-made goods to sell at events and parties, online, and in our boutiques. When possible, we visit our partners to offer mentoring and training on their home turf. In all these ways, WAR, Int’l helps our partnering safehouses empower the wounded to live with hope, healing, and dignity.
