Apart from the Olympics, the World Cup is one of the most internationally anticipated events. 240 countries came together over the last 4 years in a battle that culminated this past month in Johannesburg, South Africa. As eyes worldwide focused on the field players under the event lights, behind the scenes a darker side loomed as thousands of women were flown in from around the world to be prostituted out. Businesses were looking for the World Cup to be “a cash cow” event, bringing in millions (CNN). In March it was feared that up to 40,000 extra prostitutes could be brought in to meet the growing demand. Over the last month we asked you to pray for these women and the hearts of the men attending the games. We asked for protection, loss of interest, and a downsizing of the human trafficking activity that is involved in such an event as the World Cup. As the World Cup neared its end news reports began to circulate with news of our prayers being answered. The power of God reigned as a ban from prostitution activity held strong. CNN reports that one company lost 80% of their business. “The World Cup has been devastating… it’s chased a lot of the business away. It’s been the worst month in my company’s history,” quotes one trafficker. She continues, “No one is interested in sex at the moment.” The CNN report finished with, “…the tournament in 2010, if anything, has seen the modern-day soccer fan attracted to art galleries and museums over brothels.” AMEN! Thank you for your prayers, thank you for believing in the true and living God and the FACT that He does see our tears and weeps and cares for us. We now wish to turn our hearts and prayers to the women who have been trafficked and the repercussions they may receive from the low business. Traffickers are in the business for the money, not the sex, and World Cup 2010 did not provide the money. We weep at the thought of how these women have been or are going to be treated by their handlers for what is out of their control. Our hope is that this will be a lesson to the trafficker to reconsider buying and trafficking women to these types of events in the future. Our call to action is to be on our knees before the throne for the women that will receive the brunt of their owners’ frustration, while we praise God that he is able to shut the hearts, minds, and desires of a large group of people toward buying into the prostitution that is most likely human trafficking. We need to take COURAGE in dreaming big dreams in our prayer life. God can do anything! We need to pray that this becomes a trend in many areas where social justice minded people can begin shunning evil and boycotting activities in large numbers to drive trafficking away. Thank you for dreaming and praying BIG with Women At Risk, International. For more updates on our projects and prayer needs please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
