Abandonment is different from other types of grief because it often has a strong negative impact on self-esteem. Often, rage against the abandoner turns to self-hate, causing depression and sometimes self-injury.
Closure is often incomplete due to rejection, withdrawal-of-love, criticism, and desertion.
Often, the abandoned initially obsess over their abandoner. Nerves and emotions go off as soon as they bump into the person that has hurt them. Emotions and hurt feelings are strong and can last a long time. Some rationalize that since they are in so much pain, the person causing it must have been very special. In reality, a lot of the emotion people feel is connected to the brains natural protective tendencies. A person’s brain will associate fear with a person who has hurt them emotionally or physically as a warning. Often this emotion is taken as an attachment that cannot be broken, but this is not the case!
